CABLE DIMENSION MEASUREMENT WITH PC BASED MACHINE VISION

GOAL :

To make the dimension and insulation thickness measurements of varius types and cross-sections and to produce a labaratory solution to report the mesaurement results automaticly.

DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY:

The cable types with big dimensions and thick insulation can be measured with mechanical techniques and instruments. But espacially for the cables which have a dimension less then 10 mm, there is a big problem. A solution that will make sensitive measurements from many points varius producers' cables with different colors, cross-sections, can only be produces by a PC Based machine vision.

We can divide our system as optics and computer based image processing.

Optical System: Optical system can be designed with special lenses or a microscope according to cable producers' request. Here this system can work for different producers according to the requrests. A sensitivity of microns can be achieved according to the optik systems.

The image processing system:

Cable images is taken by an analog camera and transmitted to the computer by frame grabber cards in order to be processed in the software. System software can work on the images directly taken from the camera or with the images recorded earlier.

SOLUTION:

While system setup, optic system must be calibrated according to the cable type that will be measured. In the calibration process the pixel number that will express 1mm is determined. Pixes is the tiniest vision unit. System software is calibrated to three different intervals.

User locates the cable cross-section under the optical system and enters the calibration parameter that will work. And selects an angle to make the (tarama).System will do all measurement and graphic process automatically.

Software finds the center of the cable and center of the space of the veins in the cable. And by finding the difference between these centers it calculates the ( eksenel kayma ). The measurements done on the diameter lines drawn from the cable's center.

This measurement results can be seen either on the image or on the operator interface (graphically and numerically).

The user can take a automatically generated hardcopy report of thre measurement results and image or can access the report on jpg format of the preceding tests.

RESULT : With this system ,which was designed and produced according to user requests, a high technological, contacless solution with a high price/performance ratio and suitability for both field and labaratory was produced for the high sensitive measurement and reporting needs of the cable and metal item producers.
